Washington, D.C.-Americans for Peace Now (APN) today called on the Bush Administration to press Egypt and the Palestinian Authority to bring the chaotic border situation at the Rafah crossing in the Gaza Strip under control. Since Israel evacuated its troops from this area along the Gaza-Egypt border, thousands of people have crossed back and forth without security checks, possibly bringing arms and munitions with them into Gaza.
"The Bush Administration should not simply sit on the sidelines and watch chaos reign supreme in the Rafah region,"
said Debra DeLee, President and CEO of Americans for Peace Now, a Jewish, Zionist organization dedicated to
enhancing Israel's security through peace and to supporting the Israeli Peace Now movement. "The White House should
be using all of its influence with Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, and other interested parties to encourage
order and security to be restored at Rafah. It is in no one's interest to see this kind of lawlessness prevail. Any
positive momentum created by disengagement will dissipate if order is not imposed along this border."
