ACTION ALERT (7/21/06): "Rice Heads to Middle East; Tell Bush to Make it Count"

PAST ACTION ALERT - FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY - PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND

PAST ACTION ALERT - FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY - PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND

Secretary Rice announced this afternoon that she will travel to the Middle East on Sunday to "seek an end to the current violence."

This is a welcome development. For too long the U.S. elected to remain on the sidelines, hinting that it would not get involved until it was convinced the time was right to find a solution. Now the Bush Administration must use this trip to set in motion a process that will end the escalation, restore order, and put the parties back on the road to security, stability, and peace.

This is not a simple task; there can be no return to a status quo where terrorists are able to strike at Israel with virtual impunity, or where a fledgling Lebanese democracy is left at the mercy of militants.

For this initiative to succeed, President Bush and Secretary Rice must demonstrate real leadership. And they must be prepared to follow up, either personally or through top-level envoys, with subsequent visits and determined, sustained diplomacy - something the Bush Administration has repeatedly failed to do in the past.

Please contact President Bush. Urge him to work to end the escalation, restore order, and put the parties back on the road to security, stability, and peace. And tell him to see the job through.
