Daniel Ayalon - Israeli Ambassador with Hasan Abdel Rahman - Chief Representative of the PLO

Over 150 people crowded into a congressional hearing room on March 14th to witness an historic discussion about disengagement and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process that was hosted by Americans for Peace Now.

For the first time in a public forum, Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon spoke alongside Chief Representative of the PLO Hasan Abdel Rahman about the unique opportunity that currently exists for Israel and the Palestinians to make progress towards peace.

Ambassador Ayalon said about the event, "I think it is very timely and I think that it has been quite some time since there was a forum which included the ambassadors from Jordan, Egypt, Israel, and a representative of the PLO together in one forum. I think maybe also it symbolizes the changes of the time, and I hope the time is changing."

Egyptian Ambassador Nabil Fahmy and Jordanian Ambassador Karim Kawar also participated in the discussion, speaking about the need for Israelis and Palestinians to give their counterparts hope that their security and political needs will be addressed as the peace process moves forward.

Former State Department Spokesperson Phyllis Oakley moderated the APN event and told the audience that "the brass ring is coming around again" on the carousel of Middle East diplomacy, so all concerned parties need to take advantage of the moment and reach for it.
