Proportion of West Bank Road Construction to all of Israel

Peace Now NEWSFLASH: Peace Now slams wasteful construction of settler roads

"While people in Israel get killed on a daily basis due to a shortage in funds for infrastructure, the settlers get luxury roads," Peace Now's Yariv Oppenheimer told Ynet.

This chart shows the proportion of road construction for settlers out of the total road construction in Israel (by road length), based on data from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics. Settlers amount to less than 4% of Israel's population.

During what is usually a vacation month, Peace Now has been hard at work confronting Israel's expenditures for settlements in the West Bank.

A report released by Peace Now this week documented disproportionate Israeli government spending on roads intended for the exclusive use of settlers, when compared with spending on roads used by the general Israeli public.

Relying on official sources, Peace Now found that the Israeli government is spending more than $75 million on six road projects used by settlers only, excluding roads for the use of Palestinians or for security purposes. This amounts to an expenditure of over $10,000 for every car in the settlements.

The Peace Now report generated news stories in nearly all major Israeli news outlets, including television, radio, and print.

This report is part of Peace Now's ongoing campaign to increase awareness among the Israeli public of the economic and security burden that settlements pose.
