Yesterday, Israel announced the opening of indirect peace negotiations with Syria. This welcome development comes despite the Bush Administration's reluctance to support Israel-Syria talks.

In pursuing this brave course, the government of Israel deserves encouragement and support. In particular, the active support of the U.S. Administration is vital. No Israeli-Arab peace agreement has ever been reached without such engagement.

An Israel-Syria peace agreement would do more than improve Israel's security; it has the potential to profoundly alter the balance of power in the Middle East, providing greater stability to Lebanon, Iraq, and Jordan and increasing the diplomatic isolation of Iran and Palestinian terrorist organizations.

Please write President Bush. Urge him to do everything in his power to see that these negotiations succeed.

Please also contact the presidential candidates: Clinton, McCain, and Obama. Tell them that you want to see the next president support Israeli-Arab peace negotiations.
