A McCain administration would discourage Israel-Syria peace talks and would treat the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a low priority, according to statements made by two McCain advisors last week.

The McCain advisors -- Max Boot, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Richard Williamson, the
Bush administration's special envoy to Sudan -- made the comments at a retreat hosted by the Washington Institute
for Near East Policy last weekend.
With respect to Syria, Israel has been engaged in peace negotiations with Syria for months, despite Bush
Administration reservations. Israel entered these talks because its leaders recognized the profound positive impact
that an Israeli-Syrian agreement could have. Even Secretary of State James Baker said it would be "ridiculous" for
the United States to continue its policy of isolating Syria.
With respect to the Palestinians, one of the clearest lessons of the last eight years is that sustained, high-level
American engagement in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is a must if there is to be any progress.
Please write Senator McCain. Ask him to clarify his policies and distance himself from the positions
expressed by Boot and Williamson.
