Peace Now's Hagit Ofran targeted once again

hagit_death_threat_7-16-12-186x140.jpgPeace Now's Hagit Ofran woke up today to another death threat. Again, someone sprayed graffiti on her home in Jerusalem, saying: "Hagit you are dead." This is the third time in less than a year that hateful, threatening slogans are spray-painted at the home of Hagit, who directs Peace Now's Settlement Watch project.

I just spoke with Hagit. "No, I'm not dead. Very much alive and kicking," she said.

In fact, today Hagit uncovered that the government of Israel legalized yet another illegal outpost in the West Bank, this time the outpost of Giv'at Sal'it in the Jordan Valley. Last Friday, Hagit documented the damage to a Palestinian olive grove near a West Bank settlement, apparently another act of vandalism by settlers.

The settlers and their supporters dislike Hagit because she tells the embarrassing truth about their actions and about the risk they pose to Israel's future as a Jewish state and a democracy.

In an interview with Ynet, Israel's chief online news site, Hagit said: "I think extreme rightists are trying to frighten us, but we - the Peace Now activists - are not scared."
