Press Release re: APN's Letter to Members of the House of Representatives / Links to all related articles and items

(12/1/05)

Two weeks ago Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice worked all night with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators to broker a deal that opened an international border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. The lack of a border crossing arrangement had meant that Palestinian people and goods could not enter or leave Gaza, undermining the Palestinian economy. Months had passed since Israel's withdrawal, but this urgent problem was only resolved once the Secretary of State became personally involved.

This is a very important precedent. Experience teaches us that Israelis and Palestinians require the engagement of senior American Administration officials in order to make progress. Now and in the future, continued high level U.S. engagement is a must if progress towards a two-state solution is to happen.

Two strong supporters of Israel and of peace, Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL and Chairman of the House International Relations Committee) and Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), are circulating a letter in the House of Representatives supporting this kind of ongoing U.S. leadership and engagement.

Please contact your Representative and urge him or her to cosign the Hyde-Capps letter.
